A Vivaldi Feast: A Memorable Evening in Fletching

A captivated audience

On the evening of September 14th, Fletching Church was filled to capacity for a truly enchanting concert presented by the Fletching Organ Project. This initiative aims to restore the church's historic organ over the coming year.

Led by the talented local violinist, Charlotte Scott, the concert featured an ensemble of eight skilled musicians:

  • Anna Blackmur, Emma Parker, and Hannah Dawson (violins)

  • John Crockatt (viola)

  • Nathaniel Boyd (cello)

  • Alex Jones (double bass)

  • Christopher Bucknell (harpsichord)

Together, they brought Vivaldi's iconic "Four Seasons" to life. Each concerto paints a vivid sonic portrait of a season: the lively birdsong of Spring, the sultry heat of Summer, the tempestuous storms of Autumn, and the biting cold of Winter. The performance was captivating, transporting the audience through the changing seasons with every note.

It's easy to forget how often we encounter snippets of "The Four Seasons" in everyday life, often used as background music. However, this concert offered a rare opportunity to experience the entire work in its entirety, performed live by exceptionally talented musicians. Charlotte's skillful direction and the palpable enjoyment of the performers created a truly memorable evening.

Adding to the immersive experience, actor James Wilby read four sonnets, one for each season, published alongside the concerti in 1725. While their authorship remains uncertain, it's believed that Vivaldi himself may have penned these poetic companions to his musical masterpieces. The readings enhanced the overall impact of the performance, deepening the emotional connection to each season.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Charlotte and her talented ensemble for such a delightful evening. It was a true feast for the senses!
