The village of Fletching

Situated in the beautiful rural Sussex countryside, Fletching is a vibrant and forward-looking parish, serving the communities of Fletching, Piltdown and Sheffield Park. It lies in the Weald between the South Downs, a designated National Park, and the High Weald, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty which includes the Ashdown Forest.

The parish extends to approximately 10 square miles with a population of about 1100 and is largely rural with several working farms and forestry plantations. It includes Piltdown Golf Club, Sheffield Park House, and renowned National Trust Sheffield Park Garden and the heritage steam line, the Bluebell Railway.

Although the Fletching village population is sparsely spread, there is a strong community spirit in which the Church plays a central role. We are a busy parish with many clubs, societies and events regularly organised by our community, well attended by people from both inside and outside the parish.

The Parish Church of St Andrew & St Mary the Virgin sits at the heart of Fletching village. It is a fine Grade I listed building and is one of the largest in the area, with a seating capacity of around 240 people. It dates back to 1230 and continues to play a central role in the community.

The Chancel was re-ordered in 1880 by the Victorian architect J. Oldrid Scott, when the chancel was equipped with choir stalls and its Forster and Andrews organ.

Historical connections range from Simon de Montfort, whose knights prayed in the church on the eve of the Battle of Lewes, to Edward Gibbon, author of the Decline & Fall of the Roman Empire, who is buried in the Sheffield family mausoleum and Sir Winston Churchill and the Soames family.

The Church is usually open 24 hours a day, seven days a week for visitors and for private meditation*. Automatic lighting highlights key items of interest to the visitor, including the Neville Achievements, the Leche and Dalyngrigge monuments and the door to the Sheffield Mausoleum. There is a steady stream of visitors through the year, especially around events such as the Fletching Garden Trail.
*(During the organ project the building may be closed to visitors from time to time for security reasons)

As it approaches its 800th anniversary the church continues to play a central role in the community. Apart from the regular services and the weddings, funerals and christenings of local families, it hosts a variety of local activities, such as two community choirs; a Pilates class; a toddler group; concerts and talks; school assemblies and plays; various group meetings; a community library; ‘Cake & Cuppa’ and other social gatherings. The kitchen and toilet facilities created by ‘Project Refresh’ in 2015 enable it to provide refreshments after services and at concerts and is available for hire for certain social events. Now there are ideas in the pipeline for extending community use and providing further local amenities.
